Mission Statement
In partnership with the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the National Forensic Science Institute (NFSI) provides forensic and crime scene training, technical assistance and Alumni support to law enforcement personnel throughout the United States. Our mission is to improve the collection and processing of evidence and its submission to investigators and the courts.
Programs Offered
In order to advance our mission, the NFSI conducts the ten week National Forensic Academy (NFA) at the University of Tennessee and advanced forensic courses throughout the country. These courses enable participants to experience the most comprehensive crime scene training available and assist the administration of justice.
The NFSI provides 40 hour traveling courses that include such topics as Bloodstain Pattern Analysis, Crime Scene Photography and Latent Fingerprint Development. Please contact NFSI for further information.

NFA Begins Session XXIII
On January 12th, 2009 the National Forensic Academy will begin its 23rd Session. Slated to have twenty four attendees, this will be second session to utilize the newly renovated NFA training facility. Renovated at the cost of nearly $1,000,0000 by the University of Tennessee, this state of the art training facility hosts a crime laboratory, experiment room, photography room and classroom. It has enhanced the learning experience of NFA attendees and provides an exceptional instructional aid for the subject matter experts who facilitate the various instructional modules. The remaining two sessions scheduled for 2009 will begin on May 4th and September 14th
August Volmer Award Winners
On November 9th, 2008 2008 the University of Tennessee's National Forensic Academy was priviledged to bestow four scholarships to the 2008 IACP August Volmer Award winners at the IACP's Annual Conference in San Diego, California. Those winners included: the Florida department of Law Enforcement, the Palm Bay (FL) Police Department, the Tustin (CA) Police Department, and Collin County (TX) Sheriff's Office. Each state and local agency received their award based on investigative efforts dependent on the use of best in forensic investigative techniques.
Session XXI Graduation
On July 18th, 2008, the twenty-first session of the National Forensic Academy will graduate, having completed 10 intense weeks of training at the new Oak Ridge training facility. The class of 16 students was the first session to be able to utilize the new facility and this allowed increased training time in a state-of-the-art laboratory, experiment room and photography area.
