This professional development initiative is DHS certified and was established to help schools identify and adopt best practices in the area of school security and emergency preparedness. Using a broad, multi-hazards approach, the project addresses challenges ranging from school shootings to natural disasters to terrorist incidents. This joint effort is successful in training school authorities on methods by which to make their respective schools safer and more secure from the impacts of natural and fabricated disasters.

Training is delivered using a 3-tier model and includes:

Basic School Security and Preparedness Training

This level serves as a "train-the-trainer" course targeting both school staff and teachers. Representatives from various school systems across Tennessee may attend these training courses to better equip themselves to train their own school employees by offering similar workshops and best practice in-service programs.

Advanced Training for Building Administrators and Other Key Personnel

Tier Two is based on a security team approach. Participating school districts will send a multi-disciplinary team of four to five persons. Security teams typically are comprised of central office staff, building administrators, transportation or facility directors, student support personnel, school resources officers, and other identified key personnel.

16 hours of TASL, POST or CEU credits

Executive Seminars for Directors of School Districts

This level comprises a series of regional executive seminars to provide both directors of schools and superintendents with an overview of the Secured and Prepared Schools of Tennessee Program. Further, the seminar assists executives to identify best practices for their schools and to adopt appropriate policies for school security and emergency preparedness.

Executive level school personnel
